This was the return fixture following on from the game at Swindon two days earlier which had seen Swindon win 6-1 against a below strength Chaos team. For the first time this season, Chaos had the formidable partnership of Wayne Burgess and Colin Bennett sharing netminding duties, and Simon Manning returned from injury to re assume his position on the wing partnering Mark Oates and John Liddle.
The game began with both teams easing their way in, each coming close with some good scoring chances early on. Swindon were the first to convert one of their many chances at 2.10 when Alex Collins picked up the spills from a goalmouth scramble after the Chaos defence failed to clear the puck. Their lead would not last long, Tom Hooper scored the equaliser for the Chaos a minute and a half later assisted by Ash Cathcart and his brother Ben Hooper. From there on the game picked up into a fast pace with some hard and fast skating from both teams resulting in good scoring chances, only the performance of the two netminders kept the score at 1-1. Swindon however did add a second goal at 5.22 in another goalmouth scramble, Alex Collins playing the sniper role once again to poke the loose puck home. About a minute and a half had passed again when the Chaos scored their second equaliser of the night to tie the game at 2-2, Mark Oates continuing his recent consistency with his 5th goal in as many games. Coventry took the lead for the first time in the game at 9.06 when Paul Brown scored, assisted from Tom and Ben Hooper after some excellent passing around the Swindon net, almost tying their defence in knots with the pace and skill of the passing. Swindon showed they could match the Chaos in terms of comebacks when they made it 3-3 at 11.24, Neil Parkin scored in what was yet again another scramble in front of goal, driving home the frustration Coventry were experiencing at both ends of the ice. The run to the end of the period showed both teams grappling for a stranglehold on the game which neither could find. The determination of both sets of players almost boiled over at several points in the game as they took a more physical approach, Steu Durham standing out the most on what was a very gritty Coventry team.
The second period had barely begun when Swindon made the big breakthrough the game had been showing signs of, Alex Collins scoring his hatrick amid more confusion in front of the Chaos goal. At the mid way point Coventry changed netminders, Wayne Burgess was disappointed at the scoreline considering he had not conceded a goal from a straight shot. Coventry searched for a comeback but couldn’t match what they had produced at the beginning of the game and it was never to be. Colin Bennett took over as netminder from Wayne Burgess but was subjected to the same pressure as Swindon looked to stretch their advantage.
The third period began as the second had ended, Coventry were finding it difficult to beat netminder Froud with a barrage of shots, and the Knights solid defence had kept them from skating too deep into the zone to do any damage. In the meantime Swindon did extend their lead to 5-3 at 53.40 when Shaun Littlewood broke away and roofed the puck past netminder Bennett, breaking his shutout in the closing stages. Tempers had flared at 49.18 when hatrick scorer Collins needlessly checked Paul Brown to the head. The scuffle that ensued saw stern referee Evans dismiss both players for the duration of the game, with Ben Hooper also receiving a penalty for roughing much to his dismay as he had taken no part in the fracas. This was repeated again with only three seconds left in the game. Scott West barged Knights Barry Parkin off the puck in the defensive zone, only for the floored Knights player to get up behaving more like Barry Chuckle, looking to finish what West had started. As the two squared up, Parkins refusal to drop the gloves saw both players take a ten minute incitement penalty for their troubles. Nationwide Knights man of the match would have been an easy choice but with hatrick scorer Alex Collins being ejected from the game in the last ten minutes, the honour went to Geoff Collins for a solid showing in defence. For Coventry the award went to Toby Gilchrist for a fine effort and some good hits, never lying down to Swindons tough approach. Although Tom Hooper and Ben Hooper scoring two points each could have easily taken the award.
After the game Coach Lee Hubball commented "We let ourselves down with some sloppy defensive play, and the condition of the ice worked against our efforts to score towards the end of the game, however Swindon could make that same point and they did play a solid game to earn the victory."
